The City of San Jose Library Department is seeking to hire one Accounting Technician within the Technical Services unit of the Library. The Technical Services unit is responsible for handling the materials collections of the library such as books, periodicals, media, online databases and eBooks. The unit oversees ordering, receiving, and processing materials, as well as payment of invoices. The annual materials budget can be approximately $5.5 million annually. The Library uses not only FMS but also library-specific software called Sierra, which has an Acquisitions module for accounting.

The Accounting Technician is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day fund accounting activities in the Technical Services unit, which consists of the Accounting Technician and Senior Account Clerk. This is the highest level in the non-professional accounting series; as such, this candidate must have an aptitude for learning and gaining competencies on a variety of processes and policies. This position also supervises the Senior Account Clerk.

Key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to; monitoring the Library's materials budget, both in FMS and in Sierra; daily reconciliation of all payments and preparation of FMS Revenue Vouchers; ensuring proper sales/use tax has been entered; monitoring purchase order balances; establishing and maintaining internal controls for processing all payment types; conducting performance evaluations; directing staff of proper system entries or follow up; preparing various status and financial reports.

The position interfaces with library staff, vendors, and other city departments. The position works closely with the unit manager to perform year end closing of budgets and set up annual materials budgets. Attention to detail is a critical component for this position as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. The position requires complex data gathering and problem solving, and the environment is fast paced. The successful candidate should be a team player but also comfortable working and learning independently and managing daily tasks with minimal oversight.

ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN SALARY RANGE:

The total salary range for the Accounting Technician classification is $36.59 to $44.47 hourly or $76,112.40 to $92,492.40 annually. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay.
