Seattle Public Utilities' (SPU) People, Culture & Community Branch has a position opening for an Accounting Technician III - BU within Customer Accounts & Billing Services. This position will r eview and correct combined utility account meter reading and billing exceptions using an online billing system. The successful candidate will provide exceptional work ethic, a team-oriented mindset, and the ability to work with a diverse staff in a dynamic environment.

Job Responsibilities
• Review and correct combined utility account meter reading and billing exceptions using an online billing system.
• Review customer usage history; calculate water, wastewater, and solid waste charges.
• Process adjustments to previous consumption and charges.
• Research account/property history using computer records.
• Request meter test, replacement, or repair.
• Prorate charges over season and global rate changes.
• Initiate field investigations using creation of service orders directing meter reading staff or other SPU employees to engage in field activity needed to clear a meter read exception.

Qualifications
Experience:
Requires three years of previous accounting and/or bookkeeping experience or one year work experience as an Accounting Technician II (or a combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class)

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Working knowledge of utility billing software.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications (Word and Excel are emphasized).
  • Strong customer service ethic; strong attention to detail.
  • Team oriented and experience in mentoring and developing staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully train diverse staff in business processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit initiative in undertaking special projects or other work as assigned by Supervisor; willingness to take direction.

Additional Information

Workplace Environment (Telework Expectation):

  • This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office twice per week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is $30.72 - $34.47 hourly.
