ACCOUNTING OFFICE SUPERVISOR I

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.
This recruitment is being held to establish an eligible list used to fill current/future Accounting Office Supervisor I positions. The current vacancy is within the Orange County Sheriff's Department Jail Facilities - Cashiering Operations. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.

The Department consists of six organizational Commands comprised of 23 Divisions. Together, these Commands and Divisions provide services including land, air and sea-based patrol, custody operations, investigative services, emergency management, coroner services, forensics and specialty operations, among an extensive list of other public safety services.
The Accounting Office Supervisor I will supervise and train the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner cashiering staff. This position oversees and coordinates the activities of their assigned shifts, safeguards cash and overall trust fund, and is responsible for implementing policies and assignments as provided by their superiors. This position works in a fast-paced and demanding work environment. Accounting Office Supervisor's must be organized, and have the ability to multi-task. This position prioritizes assignments, manages their team's workload, and must communicate effectively with staff members, sworn-staff, and the public. This position may also require walking and the ability to lift up to 15 lbs. Incumbents in this position will work in a jail facility and must be able to work rotating day or night shifts, weekends and holidays.
- General purpose, principles, practices, procedures and terminology of accounting/financial recordkeeping and statistical reporting procedures
- Governmental accounting systems and procedures
- Principles of office management; modern office procedures, practices and equipment
- Methods of coding and classifying accounting documents; cost accounting methods
- Principles and practices of supervision including hiring, training, and evaluation of subordinates
- Applications of automated accounting systems may be required for some assignments
18 months experience in the maintenance and review of fiscal, financial and/or statistical records OR two years general office experience which includes at least six months in the accounting area. Experience beyond a minimum of six months in the accounting area may be substituted by education as described below.
Successful completion of the basic supervision course and/or test prior to passing probation.
Education may be substituted for experience on the following basis:
One year of office support experience may be substituted by completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in any combination of secretarial sciences, office practices, accounting, business math, business education or a related field from a recognized college.
Completion of 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, office practices, business education or a closely related field. One year of experience in the maintenance and review of fiscal, financial or statistical records may be substituted by completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in accounting, business math, bookkeeping, or a closely related field. Possession of an Associate in Arts degree or an Accounting Certificate which represents completion of all required course work in an accounting curriculum may substitute for two years of experience.

For positions with the Sheriff's Department applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.
Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credentials Services (N.A.C.E.S.).

Sheriff Human Resources screens all applications to identify the most qualified candidates for the position based on the skills required to meet the needs of the Department. After the initial screening, the qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition.
Structured Oral Interview (Weighted 100%) Applicants will be interviewed and rated by a panel of job knowledge experts. Each candidate's rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job. (Please note: The panel of job knowledge experts is not granted access to the candidate's application prior to the panel interview; therefore, a candidate's responses to the structured questions should be thorough, detailed and complete.)
Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
After all procedures have been completed, the Sheriff Human Resources will establish an eligible list of qualified candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview in their specialty area to be considered for present and future vacancies.
