Job Description and Duties

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources is accepting applications for at least one (1) Permanent, Full-Time appointment for the Accountant I (Specialist) classification in the Fiscal Services, Accounting Unit.

Under the direct supervision of the Accounting Administrator I, the incumbent performs the more difficult semi-professional accounting work in establishing and maintaining accounts and records. The primary responsibilities for this position includes auditing of purchase/service order invoices utilizing the policies and procedures set forth by the State Administrative Manual, Department of Finance, State Controller's Office and internal policies and procedures; creating vouchers within the Fi$cal System for approved invoices; promptly identifying invoice deficiencies and disputing invoices within the dispute timeline. The Accountant I (Specialist) prepares the biweekly bank deposit slips and makes deposits. The incumbent creates Fi$cal Journal Vouchers in order to replenish expense advances issued from the Office Revolving Fund; research and analyze Fi$cal Expense Advance reports and ensures outstanding balances are replenished timely; addresses supplier payment/invoice payment inquires. Additionally, the Accountant I Specialist will assist with monthly payroll and cashiering duties as required.

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate their ability, experience, and knowledge of the following:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of financial record keeping, basic principles of accounting office method, procedures, and equipment
  • Ability to apply rules and regulations to specific cases, analyze and draw logical conclusions
  • Possess extensive computer skills in Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Proficient in the use of the Financial Accounting System for California (Fi$Cal)
  • Demonstrate excellent writing skills; communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Maintain consistent, regular attendance
  • Exercise a high degree of initiative and flexibility

Working Conditions

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.
