About the Position:
The Division of Administration and Finance serves as the backbone of the CSUF campus, managing a wide array of operations from maintaining and enhancing university buildings and grounds to providing important business support services. Campus beautification, classroom improvements, and technological advancements, continue to be a priority as we enhance the learning environment and facilities. It is the mission of the Division to provide customer-focused administrative support and steward our physical and financial resources in order to fulfill the university's mission and support student success. Partnership with our diverse campus community and its many stakeholders are important in helping our operations provide excellent customer service and results. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Accountant II. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
Reporting to the Director, the Accountant II provides guidance and accounting support to campus managers and others within the campus community to ensure the application of generally accepted accounting principles, practices and concepts and recommends and implements improvements to accounting practices and processes. Analyzes financial documents for completeness, accuracy and conformance with established policies and procedures; prepares journal entries; resolves problems associated with incorrect entries, deviations from established procedures, and other inconsistencies with generally accepted accounting principles; and reconciles reports and financial data. Participates in year-end closing processes and compiles information necessary for the preparation of campus financial statements. Independently performs the full range of professional accounting work which requires a thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); analyzes complex accounting data; makes decisions and provides recommendations to solve complex accounting problems; provides guidance and assistance to other employees outside of the department; provides assistance to the other accountants. Represents the Accounting Services and Financial Reporting (ASFR) Team in campus events and provides excellent customer service to support the needs of the campus community. As a member of the Accounting Services and Financial Reporting Team, the Accountant II supports efforts in promoting an inclusive environment of teamwork and collaboration and will contribute towards ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion are incorporated in department operations, programs, and services. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field or a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Equivalent to two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); office methods and procedures; statistical and mathematical presentation of data; advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems. General understanding of internal control methods. Working knowledge of federal student financial aid annual reporting requirements, and quarterly grant reporting requirements.
Ability to apply accounting principles to the analysis of complex accounting problems; analyze and interpret accounting data; prepare clear, accurate financial statements and reports; utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and principles; make decisions and recommendations regarding accounting activities; communicate effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying technical information to non-Accountants.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Advanced Excel and various financial systems. Previous CSU experience in financial reporting or general accounting and PeopleSoft experience highly desirable. Previous professional accounting experience in a higher education setting.
